  5.         With half a million subscribers, CompuServe is more of an
  6. electronic city than a community, yet somehow it has the feel of
  7. the best of both worlds.  Subscribers can get information on
  8. virtually any subject, and experts are usually available to explain
  9. that information in a way that matches the user's level of
  10. expertise.  CompuServe, however, is not just an information
  11. service; it is a band of friends, ready to help or argue or
  12. commiserate or point out, as the situation requires.
  13.  
  14.         CompuServe rates are $6.00 an hour for communications below
  15. 1200 baud and $12.50 an hour for 1200-2400 baud.  Your
  16. communications program can probably be left at its standard
  17. settings, since CompuServe allows typical bulletin board settings
  18. of 8 bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit. You may subscribe to
  19. CompuServe using a registration package that you is available at
  20. most computer and software stores.  Many users minimize the cost of
  21. going online and getting information by using TAPCIS or AUTOSIG,
  22. two popular programs that automate interaction with CompuServe,
  23. thus greatly speeding online activities and allowing the
  24. transmitting and receiving of hundreds of selected messages or
  25. files in minutes.  TAPCIS may be downloaded from the TAPCIS forum
  26. on CompuServe; AUTOSIG is available from Library 1 of the IBMCOM
  27. forum.

  29.         Quarterdeck participates in Section 1 of the PCVENB forum,
  30. which you may reach by typing GO PCVENB at a prompt.  The first
  31. time that you enter the PCVENB forum you will be asked to join it,
  32. which you should do, since it involves no additional cost and
  33. allows you access to everything available in the PCVENB forum; all
  34. you need to do is agree to join the forum and give your name. 
  35. After entering the PCVENB forum, type MES BRO SEC:1 to browse thru
  36. the messages in Section 1, choosing which messages you wish to
  37. read.  To browse through the files available for download, enter
  38. LIB 1 and at the following prompt enter BRO.  To get help on
  39. CompuServe, simply enter HELP at a prompt.  Another popular hangout
  40. for Desqview users is the Multitasking section of the IBMSYS forum,
  41. Section 4.
